Rybelsus is the only oral GLP-1 medication currently available in Canada. It contains semaglutide — the same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy — but in tablet form, taken once daily by mouth. It is approved for type 2 diabetes, however, significant weight loss is a well-documented effect, and it is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight management.
For those who are uncomfortable with injections, oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) is an alternative. It requires daily dosing and must be taken under specific conditions — on an empty stomach, followed by no eating for at least 30 minutes — to allow proper absorption. It works through the same GLP-1 mechanism as Ozempic and Wegovy: reducing appetite, slowing digestion, and promoting fullness.
Starting at 3 mg daily for the first 30 days, then increased to 7 mg daily. The dose may be increased to 14 mg daily after 30 days if needed. It must be taken first thing in the morning with no more than 4 oz of water, on an empty stomach, and you must wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.
