Contrave is a once-daily oral pill — the only non-injection weight loss medication in this category. It combines two well-established medications (naltrexone and bupropion) in a single extended-release tablet, making it an excellent option for people who prefer not to use injections.
Contrave is thought to work with two parts of the brain: the hypothalamus, which helps manage hunger, and the mesolimbic reward system, which helps control cravings. Unlike GLP-1 medications that target gut hormones, Contrave works directly on the brain's hunger and reward pathways — reducing both how much you want to eat and how much you crave specific foods.
An oral extended-release tablet taken with food. Contrave is started at 8 mg/90 mg once daily and increased over 4 weeks to a daily maximum of 32 mg/360 mg (two tablets, twice daily).
